  • Raymond E. Forslund, Ph.D., American Chemical Society (ACS) Committee on Chemistry and Public Affairs &  Donna Nelson, Ph.D. Past President of the ACS, present the 2017 ACS President’s Award for Local Section Government Affairs to Michael G. Koehler, mgk ACSPh.D., Professional Analysis and Consulting Inc. & Chair of the Chicago Section Committee on Government Affairs.  This award recognizes a local section for outstanding efforts to increase member involvement in government affairs and advance public policy to benefit science and society.  Great work Dr. Koehler!


  • Dr. Roch J. Shipley recently testified on behalf of the defendant, Delphi Connector Systems US, Inc. against another automotive supplier, Lear Corporation.  Our client successfully defended the case and named Dr. Shipley one of most helpful experts.  See the Michigan Lawyers Weekly article from August 7, 2017.


  • Our expert, John A. O’Neill, now hold Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Certifications for Remote Pilots for Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS).  Our UAS can now be legally and safely utilized for any type of inspection, accident reconstruction, real estate or construction, and civil engineering projects.  For more information please our scene documentation page.


  • Michael G. Koehler, Ph.D. assisted with research for the Palatine Scouts in Troop 209, who were recently honored with the “Dream Up Expedition in Space” award from NanoRacks.  The troop traveled to the Kennedy Space Center to witness their project blast off in a flight headed for the International Space Station.  Their project hopes to determine if the rate a substance mutates is different in a zero-gravity space environment as compared to Earth.  Read here for specific details of their project.
  • Several SAE Chicago Section officers, including Timothy M. Hicks, participated in a meet and greet with members of the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) Motorsports team. Key junior and senior level students presented their baja and formula SAE competition vehicles, and updated the officers on the status of their plans for the coming year.  Visit for more information about this program.
  • Congratulations to Roch and Debbie Shipley on the birth of their firsBen-Laurelt grandchild!  Carter Roch Hutchison was born August 23, 2017, to proud parents Ben and Laurel (nee Shipley) Hutchison.
  • Our 2017 summer interns successfully completed their work with Professional Analysis.  Among various engine photosprojects, they took on restoring and creating a demonstration exhibit from an aircraft engine for display (see before and after photos to the right).  Thank you to Eoin Lane, Robert Streit, and Jonathan Bornemann for all your hard work and good luck in college!
  • Our president, and principal engineer, Dr. Roch J. Shipley, participated again this year in the annual Bike the Drive event, held on May 28, 2017, on Lake Shore Drive, in Chicago.  Great work Dr. Shipley!! The event benefits Active Transportation Alliance which is a non-profit, member-based advocacy organization that works to make bicycling, walking and public transit safe, convenient and fun.

  • John A. O’Neill attended the 2016 HAI Heli-Expo (by Helicopter Association International) in Louisville, KY February 29 – March 3.
  • We are pleased to announce that John A. O’Neill has joined Professional Analysis and Consulting as Senior Aviation Consultant  —  John comes to us with over 35 years of experience at BP Amoco, during which he assumed increasing levels of responsibility for world-wide aviation support.  Most recently, he was manager of operations for the “downstream” segment as well as the other business and corporate segment, with emphasis on identifying and mitigating risk.  This included corporate jets and contracted helicopters.  Previously, he had oversight responsibility to ensure conformance with standards for all western hemisphere aviation operations, including fixed and rotary wing aircraft.  Among other activities, he conducted safety reviews for BP’s aviation contractors and helicopter platforms.  Mr. O’Neill will be responsible for consulting in areas of aviation maintenance, operations, safety, and accidents.  He is a licensed Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airframe and Power Plant mechanic, with an Inspection Authorization (A&P/IA), and a licensed private pilot.

  • Michael G. Koehler and Ken Tator co-authored the Alkyd Resins chapter in the recently released 2015 ASM Handbook, Vol. 5B, Protective Organic Coatings. This newest handbook is a completely new volume in the esteemed ASM Handbook series, a standard reference in the field of materials sciences. This volume aims to be the primary reference for the protective coatings industry and applications professionals. ASM International is a professional society serving both the materials professional and materials industry with high quality technical information, education and training in materials sciences and engineering.
  • Michael G. Koehler has been appointed to serve on the American Chemical Society’s (ACS) Committee on Chemical Safety, beginning in 2015. The Committee on Chemical Safety is chartered by the ACS to promote safe practices and a safety culture amongst chemist and the chemical enterprise. The Committee is an authoritative reference to its members, society and public officials on issues related to chemical safety.
  • Johannes Laun has been working with ASTM International Committee E58 (Forensic Engineering) on developing its Guide for Investigating Electrical Incidents.
  • Timothy M. Hicks is now serving on the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), Crash Data Collection and Archiving Standards Committee.
  • George J. Theus, Ph.D. has been appointed a Fellow of the ASM International Society for his outstanding contributions to the Nuclear Energy Industry and the fields of Corrosion, Materials Engineering, Reliability and Failure Analysis.

  • Our own Timothy Hicks was mentioned in the most recent SAE International publication, “UPDATE”. This was for the SAE Chicago Section event held at the Blackdog Speed Shop described below.  Great work Tim!  The article can be viewed HERE.





  • In January, Timothy M. Hicks attended the SAE Chicago event on January 21 at Blackdog Speed Shop. After a great meal, the team at Blackdog presented an overview of their company, and their capabilities, including their speed shop, GT4 race team, and full vehicle dynamometer. We also had full access to the vehicles in the shop and show car dealership.   • Case studies are an effective publication method used to document the facts and analysis of a specific observation or incident. The content and format of a case study can vary depending on several factors, including the purpose of the case study, the degree of analysis available at the time of the report, the derived lessons learned, and any recommendations. Michael G.   • Michael G. Koehler, Ph.D. and Harry Elston, Ph.D. will be presenting a workshop entitled: “Why it went wrong: Blame-free investigation of lab-scale incidents“, on Friday, August 23rd at the American Chemical Society‘s National Meeting in San Diego, CA. Drs. Koehler and Elston are experienced accident investigators who aim to provide methods for investigating laboratory-scale incidents and to elucidate the underlying (root) causes of those incidents.


  • It is with great pleasure to announce that Dr. Michael G. Koehler has been selected as a member of the 2019 Class of Fellows of the American Chemical Society This recognition honors members for their outstanding achievements in and contributions to the science, the profession, and the Society.  Dr. Koehler will be honored at the ACS National Meeting in San Diego, California on August 26, 2019.  Congratulations, Dr. Koehler!

  • We were proud to support the Naperville Education Foundation with our school-empowered sponsorship for Scott Elementary School at the March, 2019 26th Annual Building a Passion Breakfast Fundraiser. We continue to give back with ongoing support of the students of Naperville Community Unit School District 203.  Thank you to Roch and Debbie Shipley for their involvement and generosity.

  • In November, Timothy M. Hicks attended a joint SAE Chicago and IEEE Chicago Section event to hear Dr. Egil Juliussen, from IHS Markit, present on “Perspective to 2040: Autonomous vehicles & mobility-as-a-service”.  Thank you to BMW North America for hosting this popular topic and making this a successful event.

  • Dr. Roch J. Shipley has been re-appointed as Treasurer of the Failure Analysis Society (FAS) by the ASM International Board of Directors. The Society’s aim is to promote safer, more reliable products by studying the many ways in which failures occur and to educate the larger engineering, manufacturing, and user communities regarding their findings.
